Aftercare

Updated: 5 days ago

Following proper Aftercare steps is important for optimal healed results and one of the most critical things you can do. There is some debate on the actual healed method (wet vs. dry healing), but there are overall things you want to be mindful of:

1. Keep the Area Clean and Dry

There are differences in healing protocol used for various services (ie Brows, Lips, Eyeliner), but generally you will be trying to keep any newly tattooed area clean and dry. For Brows, I prefer a "wet" healing method which will involve wiping brows gently the first day using a specialty 'tonic' which will help remove any blood plasma (a clear fluid) which typically occurs post procedure as the skin responds to injury. This is a natural response to treatment and the tonic will sooth the skin, keep it clean and gently remove the discharge so it doesn't dry on the skin. The following day--and for the next week--you will gently clean the treated area with a mild cleanser and water, but avoid soaking. Pat dry with a clean tissue and apply a tiny amount of healing salve.

2.  Apply Recommended Healing Ointment

I recommend using a special healing ointment that was specifically made for healing post-cosmetic tattoo. I favor specific all-natural healing products (NOT petroleum-based) which are designed to keep the area moisturized and supple. They are sparingly applied after daily washing during Week 1 to prevent over-application (and clogged pores). You only need a tiny bit on healing ointment --a little goes a long way!

3. Avoid Sun Exposure and Tanning

Direct sun exposure can cause fading or irritation--also will compromised the healed results. Wear a hat or use sunscreen post treatment, but avoid applying sunscreen directly on fresh PMU--(use only the recommended ointment during the healing process). After you have moved through the 2nd stage of healing (Week 2), and no scabs are apparent, you can start using sunscreen to protect your new tattoo from the sun.

4. Avoid Picking or Scratching or Rubbing

The treated area will scab as it heals, and the top layer of skin will slough off --this typically occurs during Week 2. It actually is best avoid touching the area during the healing process--when you do touch, make sure you have washed your hands to avoid germs from being introduced to the healing skin. It is very important to NOT pick at the scabs--you want them to fall off naturally. Picking at scabs can negatively affect pigmentation and lead to uneven results or infection.

5. Limit Physical Activities

Until your scabs are completely gone (Week 2), you must avoid any swimming, saunas, hot tubs and any activities that cause excessive sweating. You can work out, but choose options which DONT have you heavily sweating. It is also important to avoid conditions with a lot of dust/debris (gardening, raking leaves, etc)--especially the first 3 days--and riding in open air vehicles like motorcycle or convertible (will cause premature drying of the tattoo) You want to avoid exposing the area to moisture or bacteria until fully healed (typically 7-10 days).

6. Follow Up with Touch-Up Appointment

A touch-up is usually required after 5-8 weeks to perfect the results and ensure longevity.

Following these steps help ensure proper healing and the best possible outcome from PMU procedures like brows, eyeliner, or lip blush tattoos.
